Legend has it that in primordial times, heaven and earth fell out of balance. The water god Gonggong, in a fit of rage, struck against Mount Buzhou, one of the pillars of heaven.
This caused the sky to collapse and the earth to crack, while massive floods inundated the land. To save all living beings, the goddess Nüwa melted five-colored stones to patch the sky. She tamed the floodwaters and thus restored a peaceful life to humanity.
