Chang'e is the wife of Houyi. After the hero had shot the nine superfluous suns from the sky, he received the elixir of immortality from the Queen Mother of the West. On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, his apprentice Feng Meng took advantage of his master's absence and tried to force Chang'e to hand over the elixir. To prevent the sacred medicine from falling into the hands of an evil man, Chang'e swallowed it herself and ascended to the Moon Palace. When Houyi returned home, he was heartbroken with grief. In that moment, he was betrayed once more: Feng Meng treacherously murdered the hero with an arrow from an ambush.
